I’m so proud of how this turned out.

Watching the movie FIRST MAN about Neil Armstrong and Apollo 11’s moon landing back in 1969, made this piece even more special.

Every canvas has a backstory. Here are a few process ix of this canvases evolution before it turned into one of my favorite pieces from last year.

The frame is made of American oak and stained and an English Chestnut finish and then hand waxed. It’s a classic mid century modern float frame stained on the outside and painted with gloss black in the Inside. .

The way the shifting light plays along the glossy Black Sea along the bottom is amazing.

There are also some subtle tonal stars in the upper third.Canvas size is 30×40. Acrylics and gesso on canvas

It is available for sale. PM if interested.

Here are a few process pix of how this piece started out… I wanted to try out some abstract bright colors. I generally don’t like to use more that three unless its tone on tone.

That’s not working so let’s move into more tonal colors with the possibilities of clouds moving across the landscape….

and still not feeling anything til I started getting back to some of the black stuff I had done earlier in the year.

This piece changes with the light and am so pleased with the final result. More lunar pieces coming soon.

Here’s a final image taken at a different time of day to show how light plays with the texture in this painting.
