“… What I’m Looking For.””
I don’t have to go too far back in the stacks of music I’ve collected and listened to over my lifetime to find the artist and album that has been spun the most and has had the deepest impact on my life, U2’s The Joshua Tree.
I had discovered their music a few years prior’s to their release of this album in 1987.
Their raw energy, spiritual and soulful lyrics have have held a special place in my creative pursuits and it only seems befitting and honoring to paint another pandemic piece that mirrors some of what is going in inside and out.
“I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For” celebrates the 30th anniversary of its release in a high contrast, street style composition.
If you aren’t familiar with the song or its lyrics, here they are:
“I have climbed the highest mountains
I have run through the fields
Only to be with you
Only to be with you
I have run I have crawled
I have scaled these city walls
These city walls
Only to be with you
But I still haven’t found
What I’m looking for
But I still haven’t found
What I’m looking for
I have kissed honey lips
Felt the healing in the fingertips
It burned like fire
This burning desire
I have spoke with the tongue of angels
I have held the hand of a devil
It was warm in the night
I was cold as a stone
But I still haven’t found
What I’m looking for
But I still haven’t found
What I’m looking for
I believe in the Kingdom come
Then all the colors will bleed into one
Bleed into one
But yes, I’m still running
You broke the bonds
and you loosened chains
carried the cross of my shame, of my shame
You know I believe it
But I still haven’t found
What I’m looking for
But I still haven’t found
What I’m looking for
But I still haven’t found
What I’m looking for
But I still haven’t found
What I’m looking for”
These poetic lyrics for me paint a picture of a faith struggle to reconcile the extremes this life so often presents me with. It might also be my enneagram 6 that wants to question so much of what daily life holds.
My love for old weathered walls, typography, iconic silhouettes and heavy use of metallic gold give this piece a distinctive look and feel.
Here are some close ups of the colors and texture
