Earlier this year I joined the DESIGN sub committee of Arts Bellevue in an effort to help elevate their design efforts for the various events they have throughout the year.

I identified a few key areas and design elements that had been missing from the previous year’s graphics.

1. I always wants any core brand and sub brand to have intentionality worked.
2. Are there any key words or design elements that are missing and how can I incorporate them?
3. What is this brand’s personality and voice when those from the organization aren’t there in person?
4. Do the design solutions clearly communicate the organization’s vision and goals?
5. Did the existing graphics feature easy to read information or easily highlight each artist?

My first question when I sat down to start the design process and create a mood board was “is there anything in the current logomark and lettermarks worth keeping?

No. The old circle design element didn’t really communicate anything specific other that it paired with the logotype.

I attended the October event to get a feel for what these events are like and really enjoyed it. The singer song writers were all very talented and some were really funny. There were great stories behind their careers, songs and what they are doing now in theor careers. It was a nice intimate setting.

One of the challenges was finding the right blend or rhythm that could cover a variety of music styles, so the vintage barn wood was an easy selection.

The next thing to tackle was was the logo mark and what fonts would also be the right fit for this brand. I always spend time going through my massive collection of fonts and create a curated folder of possibilities.

Readability is always a factor and needs to look goo at any size as well as in black and white.

While the logomark is not enough to stand on its own, I wanted to see how these would look set inside a stylized graphic meant to represent the hole in acoustic guitars. I do really like the nod to the whiskey style lettering for the VUE lettering.

Another thing I had wanted to do was create individual slides for each signer songwriter so every event is formatted in a carousel style post for social and website.

By setting Instagram as the standard, I was able to stream line the process for each month’s events. In creating a super easy user friendly template it’ll make creating these monthly events a breeze.

When we had our small committee meeting before Thanksgiving, the new designs were enthusiastically received before being presented to the board.

I love how this has all turned out so far.

NEW BACKDROP

One of the other projects that had been on their wish list was a branded backdrop that was easy to breal down and set up for these events.

Here is what that will look like at next year’s events.
